2018 District Convention

Greetings to all Clubs of District 14-T. This is an official “Call for Our District Convention” for 2018 as indicated in Article VI, Section 2 of our District Constitution & Bylaws as required by Lions Clubs International.

This year, the District 14-T Convention to be held Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the Red Lion Hotel beginning at 8:00 AM in the Capital Ballrooms-East and West and the Lancaster Room. The Red Lion Hotel is located at 4751 Lindle Road, Harrisburg, PA 17111.

Along with information, fun, fellowship, and inspiration, we will be voting on our district candidates for offices of 2nd Vice District Governor, 1st Vice District Governor, and District Governor for Lions Year 2018-2019. You can find more detail on the Convention in our district newsletter. Please share this information with everyone in your clubs and plan on coming out to share in this one-day event with others from around the District.

New Lions Club for Susquehanna Township

The Lions of District 14-T, comprised of 42 clubs in Dauphin, Franklin, Juniata, and Perry counties, is currently working to start a new Lions Club in Susquehanna Township.

To date, District Governor Kathy Fouse, Global Membership Team coordinator, and other Lions from the district have met with members of township government, business owners, business leaders, the school district, and many other local citizens.  There is a lot of interest in developing a new club to provide the community service that is the hallmark of Lions Clubs.  The team continues to connect with community leaders and hopes to initiate a Branch Club by March.

District 14-T on Good Day PA

To build awareness about Lions and Leo Clubs, District 14-T had two representatives appear on the Good Day PA daytime show on local station abc27.  Representing the district were Immediate Past District Governor John Mallonee from the Hershey Lions Club, and Leo Alexus Lauver from the Susquenita Leo Club.

The Good Day PA show is currently hosted by Carrie Perry who asked Lion John and Leo Alexus about the nature of the organizations and how they help local communities.

Membership – It’s Time to Change

I wanted to take a few minutes to put a challenge to you and your clubs.  My challenge for you is to consider how you can change for the future, or even the present.  I’ll have more detail about this my GMT Message in the October newsletter.  As you read it, I ask you to think about what you can do to consider appropriate changes in your club.

For some perspective, I’d like you to read this article about Why Our Service Clubs Are Dying (and how to fix them).  It’s intended to be thought-provoking, but also to give us ideas about what we can do for the future.  We still have to determine what’s right for our clubs and our communities.  I hope that these ideas spark ideas for what you can do to strengthen your club and continue to say that We Serve.

Last Cabinet Meeting/Gavel Pass

This morning, we concluded our last cabinet meeting of the year.  Each year, we vote on distributions for specific district projects from the amounts collected from clubs throughout the year.

As Disteict Governor, I appreciate the work of our cabinet this year, and especially all the work done by our clubs.  It’s amazing the impact we have within our four counties and beyond.

Today was also the ceremonial passing of the District Governor gavel.  It was my honor to hand it over to DGE Lion Kathy Fouse.  I wish her all the best as she heads to the International Convention later this month.

Let’s finish this year strongly and continue on into the second century of Lionism.

More from the MD-14 Convention

In our last post, we talked about the first couple days of the convention including the service project we had to feed 180,000 people.

That evening, we continued with the International Banquet.  The banquet started off with the presentation of our District Governors-Elect including our own DGE, Lion Kathy Fouse.

We also got to hear from our guest and featured speaker, International President Chancellor Bob Corlew.  He shared some great stories with us from his year as President and gave us encouragement as we move into our second century as Lions.  Here’s a picture of him with Past International Director Robert Miller as they recognize one of our state Lions.

Sunday morning began with voting and a State Council business meeting to review the results of the voting and of the whole convention.  Posted around the room were all of the centennial banners from the 17 districts in the state.  As you can see, District 14-T’s also hung proudly with the signatures from our Lions, Lionesses, and Leos.

Finally, on Sunday evening, we had our Honors Banquet where we recognized our DGE’s and “pinned” them with a District Governor pin.  We are all so proud of DGE Lion Kathy and wish here all the best as she heads to Chicago later this month.

All in all, the State Convention was a wonderful experience and I’m so happy to have seen so many Lions and Lionesses from District 14-T.
